HOYO DE MONTERREY

Hoyo de Monterrey takes its name from the town of San Juan y Martinez, located in the heart of the Vuelta Abajo region. The renowned Hoyo de Monterrey plantation, one of the finest Vegas de Primera, can be accessed through a gate in the town’s main square, which reads "Hoyo de Monterrey. Jose Gener. 1960."

The word "Hoyo," meaning "hole," refers to the plantation’s low-lying position on the fertile banks of the San Juan y Martinez River. José Gener, a Spaniard from Tarragona, first used the name of his plantation for his cigar brand in 1865.

Hoyo de Monterrey’s blend is highly sought after by those who prefer a lighter, yet aromatic Habano, offering both elegance and complexity. The brand is particularly well known for its Double Corona and the prestigious Epicure series (No.1 and No.2), to which the Epicure Especial was added in 2008. The Le Hoyo series, noted for its stronger and spicier profile, complements the classic range.

All vitolas are made tripalarga, totalmente a mano—long filler and completely hand-rolled using tobacco from the Vuelta Abajo region.

PETIT ROBUSTO

This cigar could have easily been named Epicure No.3, as it shares the same presentation and flavour profile as the Epicure No.1 and No.2. Launched in 2004, it was a forward-thinking response to the smoking bans that were becoming more common.

Tasting Notes:
Introduced in 2004, this is considered one of the best new cigars of that year. Packed with flavour, offering rich spice and sweetness, this cigar delivers around 40 minutes of excellent complexity. Best enjoyed with at least six months of ageing.

Rating: 89 / 100
"Initially raw and slightly muddled with a touch of harshness, this petit robusto develops into a nutty smoke, with notes of baked apple, black pepper, and wheat. The draw is slightly firm..." — Cigar Aficionado
